There’s a teaching that’s been creeping into the church, and I’ve wrestled with it personally.
I first came across it when I gave my life to Christ. At the time, I was looking for an explanation—something to make sense of the sexual assault I felt during sleep paralysis (I’ll talk more about that in another post). I was desperate for answers. But instead of peace, this teaching made me feel alienated from the Lord… like I belonged to someone else.
Today, I want to tell you the truth: this teaching is not rooted in the Word of God. And if you’re in Christ, you are free. You have one Husband. That Husband is your Maker (Isaiah 54:5). You do not belong to a demon. You are not married to a spirit. You are the Lord’s.
Let’s get into it.
Where Did This Teaching Originate From?
This teaching began in ancient mythology and the spiritual practice of Shamanism.
What is Mythology?
Mythology (from the Greek mythos for story-of-the-people, and logos for word or speech, so the spoken story of a people) is the study and interpretation of often sacred tales or fables of a culture known as myths or the collection of such stories which deal with various aspects of the human condition: good and evil; the meaning of suffering; human origins; the origin of place-names, animals, cultural values, and traditions; the meaning of life and death; the afterlife; and celestial stories of the gods or a god. Myths express the beliefs and values about these subjects held by a certain culture. (Source)
What is Shamanism?
“A religion practiced by indigenous peoples of far northern Europe and Siberia that is characterized by belief in an unseen world of gods, demons, and ancestral spirits responsive only to the shamans.” (Source)
“The term shamanism comes from the Manchu-Tungus word šaman. The noun is formed from the verb ša- ‘to know’; thus, a shaman is literally ‘one who knows.’” (Source)
What are the Shamans?
“A priest or priestess who uses magic for the purpose of curing the sick, divining the hidden, and controlling events.” (Source)
What Are the Core Beliefs of Shamanism?
- Everything is interrelated and interdependent
- The natural world has two aspects: ordinary everyday awareness(ex: habitual behaviors) and non-ordinary awareness accessed through altered states, or trance (ex: repetitive drumming).
- Everything is alive and has a spirit.
- Shamanic practitioners can access other realms of reality.
- Non-ordinary reality is more real than ordinary reality.
- There are three inner planes of consciousness: the Upper, Middle, and Lower Worlds.
- The purpose of shamanic ritual is to engage the spirit world to effect specific changes in the physical world.
- Shamanism is based on the principle that innate wisdom and guidance can be accessed through the inner senses in ecstatic trance. (Source)
Why is Shamanism appealing to people?
It provides people a connection to nature and spiritual world, healing, spiritual growth, and a community.
How does Shamanism contrast with the Gospel?
Shamanism centers on how people can connect with the spiritual realm, seeking guidance, healing, and community through spiritual practices and rituals. In contrast, the Gospel proclaims that Jesus Christ alone is our guiding light, offering true spiritual clarity, healing, wisdom, and belonging within the Body of Christ.
Why I’m emphasizing the separation:
Scripture is clear that believers should never seek spiritual connection apart from God. In Christianity, we believe there aren’t random spirits roaming the earth offering secret wisdom. There’s either the voice of Jesus Christ—or deceptive spirits from the enemy.
God commanded His people not to imitate the practices of the nations around them, warning against divination, sorcery, witchcraft, casting spells, or consulting the dead. Instead, He calls us to be blameless before Him. The Lord asks, “Should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living (Isaiah 8:19)?”
The Bible also reminds us that no other foundation can be laid except Jesus Christ (1 Cor 3:11). We are not to blend other spiritual paths into the truth Christ has given us. Mixing different spiritual practices only brings confusion, pain, and can compromise the freedom God wants for us.
We’re also told not to grieve the Holy Spirit by the way we live (Eph 4:30). False teachings can cause a spiritual halt, quenching what God wants to do in our lives. In moments like these, the Lord often raises voices to correct and protect His people.
Scripture instructs us to be cautious around false teachers who spread deception and disrupt entire households. We’re warned that we cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too. We cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons (Rom 16:17, 1 Cor 10:21).
Finally, the Bible is clear that if someone claims to follow Jesus but refuses to turn from sin and idolatry, we’re called to separate ourselves rather than partner with their ways (1 Cor 5:11).
All of this points to one truth: God calls us to keep our faith pure, devoted, and free from compromise. He wants us safe in the truth of Jesus—and nothing else.
The Body of Christ is Lack on Teachings
False teaching is very serious. This isn’t something we can afford to brush off lightly. Yet today, false teachings often get glossed over, especially among those who are new in the faith and may not yet understand the deep spiritual truths that form the foundation of Christianity.
Jesus didn’t come to bring “peace” when it came to confronting religious leaders who were burdening people with man-made rules. He was willing to lay down His life for truth. He said, “They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them (Matt 23:4).” Jesus refused to sit by while people were being oppressed by false teachings.
Even Paul confronted Peter openly when it was necessary, so the church wouldn’t fall back into slavery after gaining freedom in Christ (Gal 2:11).
Sadly, much of the Body of Christ today has grown too lax about false teaching, sometimes willing to mix our beliefs with others just because “they believe this, so we will too.” Absolutely not. We are called to study to show ourselves approved and bring glory to God—not to believe every new teaching that comes along and treat it as truth (Eph. 4:14, 2 Tim 2:15) .
God commands us not to worship Him in the ways that other nations do (Deu 12:30-31). His Word is final, authoritative, and will be the only thing that remains when everything else passes away. We need to treat it with the honor it deserves.
The Biblical Truth
We see in Scripture that God is serious about spiritual entanglements and obligations He has not destined for us. He does not take this lightly.
There are many instances where God issues judgment because of Israel’s unfaithfulness. He even uses harsh and graphic imagery to illustrate the state of Israel’s heart and mind toward their lovers:
“But she carried her prostitution still further. She saw men portrayed on a wall, figures of Chaldeans portrayed in red, with belts around their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like Babylonian chariot officers, natives of Chaldea. As soon as she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea. Then the Babylonians came to her, to the bed of love, and in their lust they defiled her. After she had been defiled by them, she turned away from them in disgust. When she carried on her prostitution openly and exposed her naked body, I turned away from her in disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister. Yet she became more and more promiscuous as she recalled the days of her youth, when she was a prostitute in Egypt. There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses. So you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when in Egypt your bosom was caressed and your young breasts fondled.” (Ezk 23:14-21)
Do you think our God plays lightly with someone else claiming you? Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. You have been joined in spirit with Christ, and He is your Husband (1 Cor 6:15-17).
Christ nourishes His body. And if Christ is the Head, why would He allow His own body to be violated? We are of His flesh and of His bones. There’s a difference between sexual impurity that comes from our own choices and persecution from the enemy. You do not have to be persecuted or assaulted by the devil. That is nonsense (Eph 5:23; Eph 5:29-30, Luke 10:19) .
God does not share. He’s willing to give up entire peoples for you, silence every tongue that rises against you in judgment, and has declared that you are set apart for His purposes (Deu 4:24, Isa 43:4, Isa 54:17, 1 Pet 2:9).
Let me paint a striking picture: Think of secular TV shows like Maury or Jerry Springer, where couples and spouses are exposed for sleeping around. The heartbreak and betrayal on those shows is devastating. Have you ever been cheated on or betrayed? Now imagine the heaviness God feels if His own body—His Bride—were subject to spirits coming to violate her. There must be a stench in the air. Can the Body of Christ come before Jesus after being tossed to and fro by false claims of spiritual spouses?
Paul emphasizes that we are married to one Husband, as a pure virgin. He writes:
“I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.” (2 Cor 11:2)
There is no room for two, five, or thirty ‘spiritual spouses.’ Christ has claimed you. You belong to Him alone. God, your Maker, is not your "husband" in a sensual way. This is of spirit, holiness, purity, and oneness. He desires truth in your inward parts (Psalm 51:6). Marriage in the natural is of the beautiful mystery of Christ and His Church (Eph 5:32). In the natural, the marriage bed is undefiled between husband and wife and before the Lord (Hebrews 13:4). We are warned of sexual impurity with a prostitute, so how much more then is our union with Christ in spirit? (1 Cor 6:15-17)
How This Spirit Operates
- Lust: It mimics intimacy, sexual relations, and sexual perversion.
- Deception: It masquerades as a romantic lover, causing confusion through counterfeit visions and experiences.
- Bondage: It isolates people from true relationships, marriage, and healthy sexual intimacy.
- Condemnation: It places fear and shame on the person afflicted, making them feel condemned and hopeless.
- Witchcraft/Familiar: It often involves generational covenants and family trauma or patterns that manifest as false “spouses.”
There’s nothing new under the sun. If you’ve experienced this, I hope you’ve already started to discern what this spirit truly is. There’s no magic formula or secret about how it operates. The devil has been using the same tactics since the garden with Adam and Eve.
“For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.” (1 John 2:16)
But What About My Experiences I've Had That Feel So Real?
I want to talk to those of you wrestling with this question. Because I’ve been there. I’m going to share one of my own experiences where I believe a demon crossed the line—and explain why I think it shows how the enemy uses deception to keep people in bondage. I’ll do a whole series on this, because it’s important. But hear me now: the devil cannot just do whatever he wants to you.
Now, excuse my French (I know some of you might be offended by my language—but listen, I went through this torment for YEARS. I was tired and fed up. God never convicted me about how I spoke in that moment. In fact, He defended me). Here’s what happened:
I was sleeping, and “woke up” during sleep paralysis. I saw the demon in front of me—not just some dark figure, but I knew exactly what spirit this was.
As soon as I saw it, I shouted: “F you!” Three times.
The demon snapped back at me: “Yes, I’m going to F you like this!”
And immediately, I heard the voice of the Lord, sharp and clear, say: “What?!”
And just like that—the dream ended.
Usually, my sleep paralysis encounters would last for quite some time, but this one ended instantly. What stood out to me was that the Lord didn’t say, “Ashley, watch your language.” Instead, He said “What?!” to the spirit that dared to talk back to me. When God spoke, the demon looked up at Him the way a child does when a parent issues a stern command. I’ll never forget that look. When I woke up, I smiled, because I knew: the Lord defended me.
Here’s why I believe that demon crossed a line—and why God intervened so swiftly:
There’s a difference between demonic oppression and ownership. Yes, demonic oppression is real—that’s why we see so much darkness in the world. The devil is called the “Prince of the Air” and the “god of this world. (2 Cor 4:4, Eph 2:2)” All of us have turned away from the living God at some point. But through Jesus Christ, God draws us back to Himself. If you have come to Christ, accepted Him into your heart, and believe He is Lord, you are saved. You are sealed with the Holy Spirit. You no longer belong to yourself—you belong to God. You do not belong to Satan. Even Jesus tells us plainly:
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matt 6:24)
Beloved, how can you serve two masters? How can you belong to your Maker—your Husband—and also belong to Satan? Your body is not meant for impurity or spiritual prostitution. You are a slave to God, not the devil (Rom 6:15-23). Jesus came for one purpose: to save you and destroy the works of the devil (John 10:10).
You are not up for sale (1 Cor 6:20).
You are not up for trafficking.
You are not up for shame (Rom 10:11).
The world may try to shame you, but your name is written on your Father’s hand—not under His foot.
You are a co-heir with Christ, a royal priesthood, set apart, a holy nation. You are part of Christ’s very own body—the body He willingly broke for you. Christ laid down His life, descended into the depths, and rose again to save you. This lie about “spiritual spouses” tries to trample and diminish the character of Christ—as if He were unfaithful or unable to protect His own. But listen to me: if Christ cannot protect you from the devil violating you, then who can?
When that demon said what he said to me, it was trying to assert ownership. Think about human relationships. Betrayal happens when someone gives themselves to another person outside the commitment they already have. There’s a sense of ownership and mutual understanding in true relationships. But when it comes to demonic spirits oppressing men and women of God through sleep paralysis or sexual torment—there is nothing mutual about it.
That is abuse.
That is captivity.
That is darkness trying to infiltrate your mind with fear, trying to convince you that you’re bound and owned.
But Jesus said He came to give us life, and life abundantly. He came to bring us freedom.
You belong to Him—and Him alone.
Why This Is Huge
This wasn’t just intimidation or random harassment. This was a direct claim of ownership and violation over my body and sexuality—territory that belongs exclusively to Christ.
This is why God is so serious about our bodies in Scripture. We’re commanded to keep our members in service to God and not allow sin to reign in them.
Let me tell you something important: just because you had a sexual dream does NOT mean you are unclean. Especially if you weren’t even entertaining lustful thoughts before you went to sleep. Shame and guilt often follow these encounters because the devil is trying to trap you.
In Scripture, sexual union is covenantal. It’s serious business. So when a demon tries to claim sexual access to you, it’s attempting to stake a counterfeit covenant—or a so-called “marriage.” That is a deep violation of the covenant boundaries between you and Jesus, your true Husband. This attack was a lie against my spiritual identity. It threatened the covenant I have with Christ and tried to usurp His rightful place as my spiritual Husband.
Remember, the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. He is the father of lies. So don’t you think he’d lie about this, too? The devil will use any opportunity to twist Scripture. That spirit thought it had rights over my body—but my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. My body is now a dwelling place for Christ and the Father.
Christians CANNOT be possessed.
There’s no way God would entertain a demonic spirit living inside you while the Holy Spirit dwells there. God is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all. If God dwells in unapproachable light, how can darkness remain there? When demons saw Christ, they trembled in His presence. So how could a demon sit around sipping tea in the same room as the Holy Spirit? It does not happen (1 Tim 6:16, 1 John 1:5).
God will not tolerate false claims over His people.
When His people sought to enslave themselves, His anger burned. When they wanted another king, He allowed oppression. When they chased after false gods, He cut off the heads and legs of those idols. God is willing to go into the fire with you if you stand by Him in reverence and obedience. He is willing to receive you, even if your preaching of truth leads to stoning. Christ wasn’t persecuted because He wasn’t a king—He was persecuted because He refused to bend to oppression. Read that again:
Christ was persecuted because He did not bend to oppression.
Even when Paul (formerly Saul) persecuted the church, Jesus didn’t say, “Why are you persecuting those who speak for Me?” He said, “Saul, why are you persecuting ME?” (Acts 9:4)
Christ sees you as part of Himself—not separate. We are of ONE body, ONE Lord, ONE Husband. ONE. Not another, not hundreds. Just ONE. (Rom 12:5)
Please hear this message and free yourself from the devil’s schemes. Don’t be deceived or outsmarted by him. He’s been lying from the very beginning.
What About The Nephilim?
I’ve seen the Nephilim teaching used as the foundation for the spiritual spouse belief among Christians. So let’s talk about it. I’ll also share some research links for your own study, but here’s the gist:
What are the Nephilim?
The Nephilim were men of renown—the offspring of fallen angels who had sexual relations with human women (Genesis 6:4). They’re often called “hybrid offspring” and were known as giants, heroes, and warriors.
Did the Nephilim survive the Flood?
Genesis 6:4 mentions that the Nephilim were on the earth during the time of the flood and also afterward.
After the flood, God used His people to destroy what was left of the Nephilim. The giant clans that Israel later fought—like the Rephaim, Anakim, and others—are traditionally connected to the Nephilim because of their size and reputation. However, they were technically different tribes descended from various ancestors after the flood.
Although the Nephilim are explicitly mentioned only in Genesis and Numbers, Israel still faced—and defeated—numerous giant clans, including the Anakim, Rephaim, and Philistine giants like Goliath, with God’s help.
What happened to those “Sons of God” after the flood?
In 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 1:6, it says that because these angels did not stay in their proper dwelling and sinned, God cast them into deep darkness, bound in chains, awaiting judgment. Their rebellion was so severe that God wiped the earth clean with the flood.
This should bring you comfort—because it means this cannot happen again.
So, no—demons are not running around impregnating women and making “hybrid offspring” anymore.
Jesus Himself said that in the resurrection, we will be like the angels, neither marrying nor given in marriage (Matthew 22:30). If this issue were still happening in His time, He wouldn’t have spoken those words during His ministry.
Did the Nephilim have supernatural powers?
No.
Scripture shows that with God’s help, Israel conquered these enemies. These giants weren’t flying through the air, storming heaven’s courts, or wreaking cosmic havoc. David killed one with a sling and a stone. That alone shows you they were just very tall and strong men—but nothing God couldn’t handle.
Let’s keep it clear: The Nephilim narrative does not prove the existence of “spiritual spouses” chasing after Christians today. Christ has defeated every power and principality—and you belong to Him, not to any counterfeit claim (Col 2:15).
Scriptures Of God Defeating The Nephilim In Full:
- Numbers 13:28-33 – Spies see the Anakim and mention Nephilim.
- Deuteronomy 2:10-11 – Describes the Emim, tall like the Anakim.
- Deuteronomy 2:20-21 – Mentions the Zamzummim, tall people driven out by the Ammonites.
- Deuteronomy 3:1-11 – Israel defeats Og, king of Bashan, last of the Rephaim.
- Joshua 11:21-22 – Joshua destroys the Anakim from the hill country.
- 1 Samuel 17 – David defeats Goliath of Gath.
- 2 Samuel 21:15-22 – David’s men kill other Philistine giants.

My Personal Deliverance Story
I struggled for a long time with dreams, sexual torment, and fear that I was somehow “married” to a demon. I prayed, fasted, and cried out to God. I felt trapped and wondered why freedom wasn’t coming.
One of the most precious parts of my journey was how Christ constantly affirmed who I am in Him. I remember one day, feeling hurt and confused, I talked to the Lord about all this pain. Suddenly, I heard His cry deep in my heart: “I would never let a demon rape you!” At the time, I couldn’t fully grasp the weight of those words because I was still wrestling with the spiritual spouse teaching, but God kept repeating this truth to me over and over. It was like a healing balm, slowly breaking the lies I believed.
Another powerful moment came in a dream. I was sleeping in my bed when I saw a spirit trying to come over and “touch me.” But instead of fear, I immediately got up in the dream and said, “NO!” with force. Then, I shouted “Glory to the Highest” three times. That moment felt like a turning point where I truly stepped into the authority Jesus gave me and the enemy’s hold started breaking.
Looking back, I believe God did deliver me from demons connected to these lies. I didn’t always feel a dramatic “moment” of freedom—but I noticed changes. The torment lessened. My mind felt clearer. The fear lost its grip. Jesus was setting me free step by step.
Part of my freedom came from learning the truth: there’s no such thing as a spiritual marriage with demons according to the Bible. That lie lost power when I saw what Scripture really says. And as Jesus healed deeper wounds in my heart, the enemy lost access.
If you’re still battling, please don’t lose hope. Deliverance sometimes comes all at once—but sometimes it’s a journey. Keep leaning into Jesus. He’s not ignoring you. He’s fighting for you. The truth is: You do not belong to a spirit spouse. You belong to Jesus.
He is faithful to finish what He started.
Prayer You Can Use
I need you to use this prayer with caution—and I’m very serious about this.
You must be saved and know Jesus Christ personally for deliverance to truly take place. You have to believe that He is Lord, that He died for your sins, that He is God, and that He is alive today. You must be born again. You HAVE to accept Him as Lord and Savior. There’s no other option.
You cannot walk into spiritual warfare uncovered. In the Bible, when people tried to cast out demons without truly belonging to Christ, it ended in disaster:
God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding. When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. (Acts 19:11-17)
Also, remember what Jesus said in Scripture—that if your spiritual “house” is swept clean, but remains empty, demons can return with even more spirits, and the person can end up worse off than before (Matt 12:43-45). Please hear me on this.
Yes, Christians all over the world deal with spiritual battles like this—even people who aren’t in the faith can experience these attacks, though they often don’t understand what’s happening. I’m not saying something is wrong with Christians who face this. It’s simply one of the enemy’s schemes to keep us distracted and bound. But I’m being very clear about this: there’s a huge difference between a believer declaring something in the spiritual realm, covered by the blood of Jesus, versus someone who does not belong to Him.
Jesus’s blood covers us. If you do not have His blood, you are not covered. Christ is the Head of the Church, and He holds all power and authority given to Him by the Father (Phil 2:9-11; Eph 1:20-22). As believers in Christ, we have been given authority to trample on all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19).
Heavenly Father,
I come before You in the powerful name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. I thank You for Your redeeming love and the freedom You have purchased for me by Your blood.
Right now, I choose to stand firm on Your Word and the authority You have given me through Christ. I reject and renounce every spirit of lust, deception, bondage, and counterfeit intimacy that has tried to come against me or claim any part of my life. I declare that these are lies from the enemy and have no place in me.
Lord, I ask You to reveal and heal every wound—emotional, spiritual, or mental—that has allowed these spirits to find open doors in my heart, mind, and body. I break every chain of generational sin, idolatry, or ungodly attachment that has given the enemy a foothold.
By the authority of Jesus, I command every spirit of deception and bondage to loose me now, to release their hold and leave my life completely. I bind their power and break every yoke in Jesus’ name.
I declare that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. I belong fully to Jesus, my Bridegroom and King. No enemy can claim what God has bought with His precious blood. I choose to surrender all parts of my heart to You alone, Holy Spirit—lead me, guide me, and fill every empty place with Your perfect peace and truth.
Father, fill me with Your love and healing. Restore my identity in Christ and renew my mind with Your Word. Seal me with Your Spirit and guard me continually from any further deception or attack.
I thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness, Your power, and Your grace. I am free, I am whole, I am Yours.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
I'm Still Experiencing This, What Do I Do?
First, know you’re not alone. I’ve been there, crying out to God and feeling like nothing was changing. But don’t lose heart. Sometimes persistent spiritual pushback means you’re recognized as a threat in the spiritual realm—the enemy resists those who belong to Jesus and are advancing His kingdom. But not every attack automatically means you’re right where you should be. Sometimes God allows warfare to show us areas that need healing, repentance, or deeper freedom.
Here’s what I’d encourage you to look at:
Check for wounds and open doors.
Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Do you have past wounds from sexual or spiritual abuse that need healing (This doesn't automatically give the devil legal ground, he just wants to exploit you)? Are there objects tied to the occult (books, trinkets, crystals, etc.) that you need to get rid of? Are there relationships you should break off, unforgiveness you’re holding onto, or sin that’s still lingering? Not every object is automatically harmful, but anything tied to witchcraft, idolatry, or false spiritual practices needs to go.
Mind agreements and legal rights.
The mind is powerful. Christ has shown me how deeply our thoughts form agreements we might not even realize. A small thought like “I feel ugly today” can spiral into “No one wants me… I’m unlovable.” That’s not just venting—that’s a harmful declaration. After spiritual experiences like sleep paralysis, the enemy loves to whisper, “I’ll never get free. I’m doomed.” Don’t be like me and believe it. Speak the truth of Scripture over yourself—and believe it.
Be honest about lust.
If you’re struggling with lust, be honest with God. He’s not a Father looking to beat you up. Yes, He’s holy and serious about sin because you’re made in His image—but He’s also merciful. I’ve dealt with lust too, like millions of other Christians. Remember, even David—who fell—was still a man after God’s own heart. Any voice telling you “You’re disgusting and worthless” is not God. God’s voice says, “I have redeemed you, for you are mine.”
Fast.
If you’re still under heavy spiritual pressure, consider fasting. (Check with your doctor first if fasting from food.) Some people fast from food, screen time, or other comforts. Honestly, the most powerful fast for me is food. You can do a partial fast or intermittent fasting. Keep it private unless you absolutely must share it with a spouse or close family member. Remember: fasting isn’t magic—it’s humility and surrender that draws you closer to God and helps crucify the flesh. But it’s also a powerful weapon in spiritual warfare.
Fully submit to Christ.
Have you truly surrendered everything to Jesus? Search your heart, your wounds, your fears—everything. A contrite heart, God will never despise (Psalm 51:17). I’m not saying this to condemn you. Even years later, I look back and see areas where I wasn’t fully grasping who I was in Christ. Coming to Jesus isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. Yes, there’s joy—but we’re also in a spiritual war (Eph 6:12). Following Christ is a lifelong commitment that can demand great sacrifice because He gave everything for us. For some believers throughout history, it’s even meant laying down their lives.
Consider your calling or anointing.
If you’ve experienced abuse and find yourself facing strong spiritual opposition, it could be because you carry a calling to minister in that very area. The enemy fights hardest against those who carry something precious for God’s kingdom. Remember: you are fighting from victory already won. If you feel this might be true for you, realign yourself and submit fully to God’s will. The devil fears your fruitfulness—and God’s calling often provokes warfare.
I Feel Like My Physical Body Is Being Affected By This?
Some women share painful stories of miscarriages or spiritual oppression they believe come from “spirit husbands.” While these experiences are real and heartbreaking, Scripture gives no support for the idea that demons or fallen angels marry or have spiritual spouses with humans. Instead, these are often manifestations of spiritual oppression or deception. Jesus offers true healing, freedom, and restoration—not bondage to lies.
Jesus told me plainly, if He really allowed the devil to attack Christians without limit, we would all be destroyed. That type of warfare simply doesn’t compare to the sovereign protection God places over every believer. The enemy is a defeated foe. The “evil one” cannot touch those who belong to Christ (1 John 5:18). Because of this divine protection, we are empowered to go boldly into the world and preach the gospel—even amid spiritual opposition.
This means any so-called “spirit spouse” attack is not a sign of ownership or defeat, but a lie trying to steal your peace and freedom. You belong to Jesus, and He is more than able to protect, heal, and restore you fully.
Scriptures For Comfort (Say Aloud If Needed)
- Psalm 4:8
- Psalm 91
- Psalm 18
- Psalm 139:5
- Isaiah 54:5
- Isaiah 54:17
- Romans 8:38-39
- 1 Corinthians 6:15-20
**Please don’t think God’s Word isn’t working just because you’re still facing opposition. I’ve been there—I tried casting things out and speaking Scriptures over myself, yet I still had tormenting dreams at night. I started believing the lie that I had to “do more” and lost some confidence. I want you to stay confident. Do NOT think these scriptures do not work if you are facing opposition. God’s Word will not return to Him void—it will accomplish what He sends it to do (Isaiah 55:11). You are COVERED, LOVED, and SET APART to God regardless. The enemy’s tactics do not defile you; active sin is what defiles. Christ’s blood that covers you is perfection (1 Pet 1:18-19, Heb 9:14) and absolute (Heb 10:14).

I pray you find peace, refreshment, and relief from this post. You have been bought with a price, beloved. We do not follow the doctrine of demons, but the doctrine of God. There's no such thing as "spiritual spouses" or "spiritual marriage" according to the Bible. The devil's tactics do not defile you, active sin is what does.
Please take time to read this page on Biblehub — explore not only the verse listed but also the related scriptures in the sidebar. Be filled with truth, and understand how dangerous this false doctrine is for you personally and for the Body of Christ as a whole.
With much love and a holy kiss,
Ashley 💓
